Swashbuckling cricket, dancers, signing sessions, all part of the Cape Cobras plan to entertain at home in Momentum One Day Cup

February 17, 2017

One of the highlights on the cultural and recreational-mad Cape and Boland cricket supporters is the Momentum One Day Cup competition. A Momentum One Day Cup final at PPC Newlands has become an institution, and is underlined by the fact that the Buildnat Cape Cobras hosted the final the past four seasons.

Extraordinarily, the Cobras finished seven points ahead of the second-placed team last season in the league phase, with 33 points, including five bonus-point wins.

There have been several factors that have formed part of this successful approach. The swashbuckling top-order led by Richard Levi, the solidity of Stiaan van Zyl, the expert partnerships between Justin Ontong and Dane Vilas and the classy swing and seam bowling by Beuran Hendricks, Dane Paterson, Wayne Parnell and Rory Kleinveldt have set up comprehensive wins.

But you require wicket literacy if you want to win at Boland Park and PPC Newlands. You require an intimate understanding of how to read the surface and how batsmen must play in order to be awarded.

And that is something that the astute opening pair of Levi and Andrew Puttick have done remarkably well the past four seasons.

Incidentally, amongst the players who have carved the most ever sixes in domestic 50-over games, there are three Cape Cobras stars. They are Justin Kemp (68 sixes), Herschelle Gibbs (61 sixes) and Levi (59 sixes).

“One of our greatest assets is that we have such a vast array of attacking batsmen who have embraced different styles, but they can either find or clear the boundary ropes, or literally run opposing teams ragged with their athleticism between the wickets,” said Ashwell Prince, the Cape Cobras coach.

“And that is why the Cobras can and most probably bring the feel-good factor back to Boland Park and PPC Newlands in the home strait of the domestic 50-over competition,” he added.

“We launched our #SwipeBlue Momentum One Day Cup campaign on Tuesday where the players and coaching team dropped in on a mini cricket festival as well as a Primary School to show some Valentine’s Day love to the young fans and their supporting parents. The players were blown away by the support and they can’t wait to play in front of their home fans starting on Friday 24th at PPC Newlands,” said David Brooke, Brand Activations and Sponsorship Manager of the Cape Cobras.

“Some exciting things to look forward to this campaign are we are introducing our new fantastic Dance Crew to the Newlands faithful as well as having official signing sessions after each game at Boland Park and PPC Newlands where all the squad members will be available for pictures and autographs for fans young and old,” he added.
