“The selection of our spearhead Dane Paterson for the first two South African One-Day Internationals against Pakistan comes as a fantastic opportunity to open the Cricket World Cup door even wider. He is at the peak of his career and must use this to impress the selectors,” said Faiek Davids, assistant coach of the World Sports Betting Cape Cobras.

His reaction came after it was announced that Paterson has been recalled for the first time to play for the Proteas in the 50-over format since his debut series against Bangladesh in 2017.

He was picked for the first two One Day Internationals on the 19th and 22nd January.

Linda Zondi, the national selectors’ chairman, said: “We need to look at all the options available to us as we get closer to selecting our final squad for this year’s World Cup. Rassie (van der Dussen) and Dane are two players who have been knocking strongly on the door in all formats.”

In Paterson’s case, he is currently the second top wicket-taker in the 4 Day Franchise series, with 33 wickets in six matches.

“I was happy to be selected. It was a surprise. I know the Cricket World Cup coming, but there are many good bowlers. I will have to take my opportunities,” Paterson said.

“I am happy for his selection. He is a strong bowler with a strong run-up to the wicket and he has the ability to take wickets in the power play and at the business end in the death overs as well. He can bowl the slower delivery and uses the seam to cause destruction in the power plays. He could also bowl the knuckle ball to bamboozle batsmen.” Davids added.

Paterson has captured 328 first-class wickets in 95 matches, and 97 List A wickets in 67 matches.

In the 2016/2017 season, he nipped out 42 first class victims in the first-class arena.
